In most cases, the reasons for change orders lie in differing geotechnical ground conditions or their underestimated effects during the dynamic excavation process: excessive tool wear, severe clogging during tunneling, soil liquefaction, significant swelling or squeezing of the rock mass, gas release, or excessive groundwater inflow often lead to substantial additional costs and construction delays—in some cases, they even jeopardize the project's feasibility.

Tunnel construction is a fascinating and complex field encompassing many individual disciplines.
Throughout our many years of professional experience working with design offices, on tunnel job-sites, with TBM manufacturers, in courts, with clients, and with contractors, we have gained expertise that we can tailor to specific topics and present to select professional audiences.
Dr. Rehm initially spent five years as a lecturer in mechanized tunneling and shotcrete construction at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HfT), teaching master's students. Since January 2026, he has been a lecturer in tunnel construction at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
He also regularly speaks at international workshops worldwide, sharing his practical professional experience in an engaging and accessible way with a broad professional audience.
